Re: Bought some Morgans from 1881 to 1888
Per each coin independently...the value depends on the number of coins that were struck at that mint that year and of course demand.

I`m a complete moron when it comes to numismatics but I looked at wikipedia Morgan entry to learn about dates and marks.I also checked on ebay and some more common ones bring more than the rarer ones(none of mine are really rare).Does it make sense to send them to be slabbed?I see slabbed ones not bringing anything on ebay either.

Re: Bought some Morgans from 1881 to 1888
Back in the mid-70's, my first know-nothing foray into metals was buying some Morgans from a local coin shop.
They varied in price from 12-30 bucks....about 400 FRNs total purchase......last year, just for fun, I took them back to the exact same guy I'd bought them from, and he offered me slightly less than 300 for them....not much above melt value. Almost 30 years, and -25% 'appreciation'.....not EVEN considering inflation. That, fortunately, was my first, last, and ONLY venture into numismatics. |

get the red book and see what retail prices are
what dealers will pay is always less than those prices-- those are retail prices. |

Can you list the coins and mint marks? If so I can give you a range. If you can post pics, I can give you a very good idea of their value. Quote:
I am not suprised! I am a numismatist, but if a dealer can get numismatic coins for 8x to 9x face then he is happy, as he can packaged and make a nice nugget. Good for you for not selling. Selling coins to a dealer is like buying and selling drugs from the same drug dealer. How can you win? :banghead: Lastly, and I do know the historical prices from the 70's to today, but generically speaking if you bought PMs near the top of the late 70's early 80's, and did not sell quickly, the PM value dropped almost overnight. Those people can just about break even, if you do not calculate inflation. If you are curious, list some of the coins and I will give you good idea of their value. I enjoy doing things like this. I am a coin nerd. The Great Ag |

Re: Bought some Morgans from 1881 to 1888
there's about ten varieties of 1878s. better start countin the tailfeathers.
here is a place to start. these prices will be way high but it is good for an idea of what coins are more key than others http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.cht...morgan_regular |
